Arrowhead Mountain Lodge's elevation is about 9,500ft. It serves the mountain community of Arrowhead, as well as all those looking for that "locals," feel, in the woods, on a mountain, on a dirt road, miles from civilization.

 

We border BLM and is only a few miles from the Uncompahgre National Forest.

 

We are located at a high elevation of 9500 feet.

Our air is thin! If you have any respiratory problems or have a nighttime breathing device it is best to bring your breathing devices.

 

To best prepare for our high-altitude drink, LOTS OF WATER & limit your alcohol intake.  Iced tea and bubbly soda do not count as the water here. Not to brag, but we have the best water in the state!

After Hours Check-in

Our reservation desk closes at the same time the Bar does.  For any reservation, not checked-in by closing time, we will leave an envelope in the lobby entrance or on the lobby front door, labeled with the last name of the booking with room keys and instructions on where to locate your room.

The Drive      

You can find us off of Highway 50, exactly half-way between the towns of Gunnison and Montrose.  Our road is between mile marker 123 and 124.  Simply put, you know your turn is coming when the Highway enters the Arrowhead Canyon (after Blue Mesa Reservoir or after going over Blue Mesa Summit, depending on which direction you are coming from). We also have (small) blue highway signs facing both directions to help you find the turn.

The road to the AML is a dirt road.          

Most of the time it is passable by a front wheeled, two-wheel vehicle; even, sometimes, motorcycles. If you are driving a low-profile vehicle and are concerned with dirt and gravel hitting your undercarriage you may want to reconsider your stay with us and book in town as nearly all the roads off Highway 50 between Gunnison and Montrose are dirt roads.

In mid to late June the County treats The Alpine with a bio-chemical that sets-up the dirt road almost like concrete. This treatment can last almost until it snows.

 

Take your time on our dirt road...

and pull over for faster vehicles. It is a 5.5-mile drive from the highway to Arrowhead Mountain Lodge, and there is a lot to see on your journey up.  You don't want to miss a chance to see chipmunks, marmots, beavers, deer, elk, bears, sheep, and cows!

 

Road Conditions are subject to the season, weather, and yearly maintenance. 

"The Alpine" Plateau road condition can be best predicted by the time of the year, the weather, and the snowpack.

 

Coming during the winter?!?

We are open all year-round, and we are accessible by vehicle in the winter.  The Arrowhead Community maintains The Alpine from the highway to their communities "Winter Parking Lot," located about a half-mile past the lodge. 

 

Most 4x4 or AWD vehicles have little to no problems navigating the Alpine winter road. However, we do recommend having snow tires or chains with you on your attempt up The Alpine from late October till Mid-May. 

 

For any reason, you do find yourself stuck, off the road, or don't want to "chance it"

If it looks like you will be arriving during inclement weather,

We ask you to please call us when you are leaving Montrose or Gunnison.  If we do not see you within an hour, we will send out the search crew.
